The Heart of Rock and Soul

Dave Marsh, 1989

50 HEAT WAVE, Martha and the Vandellas
Produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier; written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland
Gordy 7022 - 1963
Billboard: #4

"Heat Wave" revolves around a very basic question: "Has high blood pressure got a hold on me or is this the way love's supposed to be?" By the end, Martha knows that there is no answer: "Can't explain it don't understand it, ain't never felt like this before." But her description of the symptoms and Holland-Dozier-Holland's use of the Motown house band as an enactment of the fever defined this particular contagion for a generation. Personally, I'd be willing to endure hospitalization for a few weeks just to feel the way that baritone sax sounds.
